We can thank her for many changes across our climate, we can thank her for the support she believed in.
The Queen adored our planet and the planet respected her 💚 she will be missed, her love for planting trees and caring for our wildlife and nature! Here’s a few little favourites of mine…
Queen Elizabeth Calls Climate Change Inaction “Irritating”
Our Queen done her upmost best to support our planet, did you know she tackled the Great Smog?
What was the Great Smog?
The Queen took to the throne, she knew there were already signs of climate stress in the UK and she worked hard to bring our beautiful country back to life. Ten months into her reign, in December 1952, the Great Smog developed across London.
The severe effects led to the first major piece of environmental legislation for Queen Elizabeth. She introduced the Clean Air Act in July 1956 and aimed to reduce the air pollution effects from coal burning and industrial working.
The Queen Planted Trees everywhere she sent!
Extensive tree planting was taken place within the Royal Gardens, the Queen herself planted oak trees for each of her four children. She committed to her travels and implemented tree planting into many of her events. The Royals are highly known for working hard on wildlife conversation.
Protect our Bees.
In Spring 2009 two Italian honey bee hives were introduced into the Royal Gardens of Buckingham Palace. A perfect and protected location for the bees and plenty of surrounding wildlife and wildflowers for them to forage.
The British monarch criticized world leaders who “talk” but “don’t do.”
COP26 Glasgow
The Queen was irritated by this event, the lack of support and much talk but not much evidence to support the climate change summit. She made it clear in her speech that the event was not driving enough for our planet to be saved.
She banned herself wearing Fur.
Most outfits throughout the Royal Wardrobe was finished with a touch of fur. In 2019 the Queen banned fur from her wardrobe and she particularly made it clear any fur would be fake or reused from previous garments she owned.

JUST ONE Tree has announced the dates for the 4th iteration of its highly popular JUST ONE Tree Day, which is an international event that brings together hundreds of schools and encourages children to bring in £1 to plant a tree and help reforest the planet – a tree is planted for every £1 raised. 2022 dates:
• England, Wales and Northern Ireland: Friday 14 October
• Scotland: Friday 30 September
• International: Friday 14 October
The day highlights to children and young people how their individual actions can make a difference in the fight against climate change and the biodiversity crises. It is the flagship event of JUST ONE Tree, a British not-for-profit dedicated to removing CO2 from the atmosphere through global reforestation. JUST ONE Tree Day is open to both primary and secondary schools – they can sign up here. Schools taking part can access free lesson resources that fit in with the national curriculum. As part of their fundraising activities, children learn about photosynthesis, the benefits of trees for both people and wildlife and the vital role they play in reducing the impacts of climate change.
JUST ONE Tree founder, Amanda Bronkhorst: “JUST ONE Tree Day was born out of my passion to make a difference – not only for my young daughter, but for the future of all children. JUST ONE Tree Day has resulted in over 200,000 trees planted by pupils from over 500 schools and I know that this year the ‘children’s forest’ can grow even bigger. “School participation is doubly important because not only does it raise funds, the forest planted on their behalf helps compensate for a school’s environmental impact. “Many children today struggle with climate anxiety, caused by the reality of our climate crisis. But JUST ONE Tree Day tells them that we can all make a difference with a simple action. By taking direct action it spreads hope and positivity. It’s important to involve our young, helping them tackle their worries of today while setting them up for a sustainable lifestyle that aids their future.” The money raised is used to plant the ‘right trees in the right place’ – supporting reforestation projects in Haiti, Indonesia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Nepal and Zambia, including mangroves and kelp forests. What our schools said:
• ‘Our JUST ONE Tree Day is always a day that seems to raise spirits as well as money. It has become a part of our Shotley School Annual Calendar and is enjoyable for children and staff. We always display the certificate, and details of carbon dioxide removal from the trees they have planted, and in terms of equivalent weight. i.e. a baby elephant!’ Shotley Community Primary School, Suffolk, UK
• ‘Everyone was extremely supportive of this wonderful event. As a school we are keen to take part again next year.’ Kingsham Primary School, West Sussex, UK
• ‘This is one of my favourite charities and we are honoured to take part each year.’ Grimsdell Pre-Prep School, Mill Hill, UK
• ‘The day was spent dressed like a tree, doing lots of wonderful things inspired by trees, sharing stories about the importance of trees and much more. JUST ONE Tree Day was a complete success!’ Ottery St Mary Primary School, Devon, UK

As U.K. temperatures soared above 30 degrees daily recently, new research from The Eco Expertsreveals that UK based searches for ‘solar panels’ hit its highest point ever during this time.
According to Google Trends data, on Thursday 11th August the UK user search interest for solar panels hit a score of 100 – the first time it has ever done so. This is an increase of over 100% from the previous two months’ average score (49.5).
The week (8/11/2022) started with a search interest score of 58 but rose quickly to its peak score on Thursday, due to the strong sunshine the UK was experiencing throughout the week.
Google Trends Solar Panels Data for Past 90 days:
With news of even more energy bill increases to come this year, many UK residents are clearly interested in capitalising on the weather by using solar panels to help to cut down their energy bills. Recent data from The Eco Experts National Home Energy Survey (April 2022) shows that 60% of UK residents want to go greener due to rising energy costs.
The previous peak search score of 91 for ‘Solar Panels’ came in March 2022, the same month the 54% increase in the energy price cap was announced.
The Eco Experts editor Charlie Clissitt commented on the findings – “’Obviously the rising energy bills and the unusually hot weather are extremely bleak situations, but it’s encouraging to see so many people in the UK turning to this green alternative. Solar panels are quick to install, easy to maintain, and are looking increasingly sensible. The average three-bedroom property would break even on a solar panel system in about 11 years, but after the October rise in the price cap, you’ll break even in just 7 years.”
To help with this surge in search interest around solar panels, The Eco Experts has recently launched a new solar panel calculator for UK homes that follows the latest Government 0% VAT rates on renewable energy solutions. By inputting the number of bedrooms a property has and the UK area where the home is located, the calculator works out the number of panels needed, the cost of installation, the annual savings, and how many years it takes to break even.

● A series of images have re-imagined iconic movie posters to showcase the growing issue of plastic in our oceans
● Among the films given the realistic re-design are Jaws, The Little Mermaid, Finding Nemo, Aquaman and Cast Away
● If current levels of plastic pollution continue, plastic is expected to outweigh all the fish in the oceans by 2050
A series of images have re-imagined iconic, ocean based, movies such as Jaws and Aquaman to give a realistic representation of the plastic pollution in our oceans – and the results are shocking and slightly disturbing.
The images come from Oceans Plastic Free, a sustainable toilet and kitchen roll company, who aim to highlight how action is needed sooner rather than later to tackle this growing problem.
shark targeting a plastic bottle rather than an unsuspecting swimmer complete with a six-pack ring caught in the animal’s teeth.
Other posters included in the series include Disney’s The Little Mermaid and Finding Nemo, Castaway and DC’s Aquaman.
Each of the movie posters featured include a slider mechanic so that users can quickly compare the original against the re-designed image.
Calls for countries to tackle the issue of plastic pollution in our oceans have been growing in recent years, with countries like Bermuda recently calling for more aggressive action to tackle the issue ahead of last year’s climate conference, COP26.
Their deputy minister claimed their beaches and shorelines were currently blighted by litter from the US and further afield and warned the issue would have far reaching consequences, from impacting tourism which the island relies on to affecting the health of residents.
There is currently an estimated 165 million tonnes of plastic in the world’s oceans, that’s 65 million tonnes heavier than the world’s heaviest object, The Great Wall of China.
According to a recent report, by 2050 there is expected to be more plastic than fish in the ocean by weight.
Graham Cox, the Managing Director for Oceans Plastic Free, adds: “From underwater civilisations to out-of-control sea creatures and mermaids, these ocean-themed movies have it all. Well, nearly. One thing that’s often absent from these underwater adventures is the plastic pollution that is now unfortunately a feature of our waters.
While we appreciate that films are a means of entertainment and often escapism, the reality is the silver screen is currently filming our oceans through a rose-tinted camera lens; portraying crystal clear waters filled with biodiversity. Which is what we should be aiming for, but in order to achieve this we need to first acknowledge the current situation. Which is decidedly less picturesque, with figures from the Marine Conservation Society suggesting that every year around 11 million tonnes of plastic enter our oceans every year”.

From the farm to your home, the organic fruit & vegetable delivery service from Organibox looks set to shake up the marketplace
Organibox, the 100% organic fruit & vegetable, UK-wide delivery box service, looks set to become a standout challenger brand as it promises to deliver the freshest, tastiest and healthiest produce.
Organibox’s Eat Well, Feel Good ethos caters for a growing customer base across the country whose taste buds and moral compass are pointing them in the direction of organic produce.
From £19, UK consumers can choose to have organic fruits, organic vegetables or mixed organic fruit and vegetable boxes delivered weekly, fortnightly or monthly all with free UK-wide delivery.
The founding partners of Organibox know the organic fruit & vegetable business inside and out having gained more than 70 years in the industry between them. Their generations of experience have taught them the value of doing things right. This means providing the best 100% organic produce, the fairest relationship with farmers, the least environmental impact and the most positive impact on others.
Tony Berry, founder of Organibox, comments: “Organibox is the closest British customers can get to walking up a farm track, shaking hands with the grower and coming home with an armful of freshly- picked produce for dinner.
“During our time in the fruit & veg trade we’ve noticed an opportunity to do things differently. For the benefit of our customers, the farmers and the environment, we’ve pared-down and stripped back the supply chain. This means, in some cases, we can take our organic produce from our farmers’ fields and deliver them to your home in two days. You’ll be hard pushed to find fresher than that!”
Organibox’s ethos is driven by ethnicity. The company is passionate about organic produce and works in harmony with nature to bring its customers the best, seasonal produce but its focus on the environment doesn’t stop there. From day one it has pledged to never use plastics; all its packaging is 100% recycled and recyclable and it never uses air freight. Green credentials were also top of the priority list when selecting a logistics partner and DHL was chosen based on its environmental drive as well as its high approval rating on Trustpilot.
Given Organibox’s support of organic farming, soil is important to the start-up business. It has specifically chosen to use unbleached packaging and environmentally sound printing to make its boxes compostable. Together with vegetable and fruit peelings, customers can tear up their Organibox and place it in their home compost heap. It was these levels of consideration, together with the businesses farming family’s commitment to organic farming methods, that gained Organibox accreditation with the Soil Association. The leading organic certifier, the Soil Association is the charity that digs deeper to transform the way we eat, farm and care for our natural world.
Tony adds: “When starting Organibox we were acutely aware of consumers’ growing desire to eat organic produce and we believe there are three factors involved in the decision to shop organically; Cost, Convenience and Conscience.
“Firstly, from a cost perspective, we know Organibox offers genuine value for money as we regularly compare our prices to the supermarkets to ensure they’re on point. We offer free home delivery, anywhere across the UK mainland, so we’re ticking the convenience box and finally doing the right thing is important to us, in every aspect of our business. Our ethical efforts aren’t a gimmick or greenwashing. They stack up, stand up and are scrutinised at every turn which should be massively appealing to UK shoppers.
“As well as passionately championing our environmental endeavours, we also firmly believe everybody should have the opportunity to eat healthily and well. But until that happens, we’re proud to support Food Banks across the UK. This means every time you buy an Organibox, or better still subscribe to our regular deliveries, we’ll donate 50 pence to The Trussell Trust. Our founding principle is to provide good quality food as well as to give back – that’s where our motto Eat Well, Feel Good comes from.”

Claire Walmsley has launched a Kickstarter campaign to self publish her first children’s picture book – ‘The Town That Threw Everything Away’. She has until the 24th September to raise £1250 needed and needs your help!
The fun and engaging story, aimed at children aged 4-8, was written to encourage children and adults to talk about sustainability – an important message in current times.
Claire and her family started their eco journey a few years ago and know that it’s not about being perfect but about starting. That’s the take away message from the story – small steps are the way forward.
Despite the book not yet being in print, Claire has been performing the story locally in libraries, school and in local refill shops using props and puppets. People have praised her inventive and creative storytelling and children particularly like the characters known as the Dewds.
Claire has worked tirelessly to get the project off the ground but it hasn’t always been easy. She suffers with Crohn’s disease – a chronic condition that has hospitalised her twice this year alone.
You can help by pledging your support on the Kickstarter website http://kck.st/3QDkc9b . A £10 pledge will get you a signed copy of the book when it is released in March 2023. Further pledges unlock extra rewards like audio recordings and activity packs.

Straw, hemp, cocoa shells, daisies and even seaweed – how your (plastic-free) future groceries could be packaged.
Sustainable packaging provider, DS Smith, is thinking outside the box by trialling new and innovative materials for its paper and packaging making process which includes straw, daisies, hemp, cocoa shells and seaweed.
The company is currently trialling a range of alternative fibres as part of its £100m R&D and Innovation plan to accelerate its work in the Circular Economy. The programme will look at the fibre potential and plastic replacement capabilities of a number of materials in order to diversify the range of sources it uses for packaging.
DS Smith is also exploring the use of annual plants such as daisies and agricultural wastes for their fibre properties and potential paper performance. The company has also undertaken industry-first trials exploring how seaweed may be used as a raw material to design out problem plastics from carton, paper wrap and cardboard tray packaging.
Now, the DS Smith Innovation Team is experimenting with cocoa shells for carton board in chocolate packaging and is looking at other materials with a good environmental profile. For example, agricultural waste in the form of straw, and annual plants like hemp or miscanthus, which in some cases might require significantly¹ less energy and water to produce than some traditional paper-making materials.
Thomas Ferge, Paper and Board Development Director at DS Smith said: “With the strain on the planet more evident than ever, our research has the potential to lessen pressure on forests and protect the planet’s natural resources.
“As well as looking at how we optimise the standard recycled paper fibres that we already use, we’re very excited by the prospect of how other resources such as miscanthus, hemp, agricultural wastes and seaweed could be used in the next generation of packaging solutions. This is all part of our goal to make the most of every single fibre we use by 2030.”
DS Smith has been trialling such novel materials with research partners. In an innovative pilot programme, DS Smith and The Research Institute of Sweden (RISE) explored how the properties of straw and seaweed could potentially work as a packaging product in comparison to more traditional materials including recycled hardwood and softwood.
As part of DS Smith’s Now and Next sustainability strategy, the company has an ambition to optimise fibre use for individual supply chains in 100 per cent of its new packaging solutions by 2025 and optimise every fibre for every supply chain by 2030. DS Smith’s fibre optimisation work and wider sustainability progress can be found in its latest sustainability report.

So happy to reach a new contact which is the wonderful Pudding Pot Lids company. These bamboo lids are a huge hit for the 100’s of dessert jars which are collecting in everyone’s homes.
You can check out our latest video here on how they work!
Pudding Pot Lids is a small, black-owned business founded in Hackney, London.
“Eco consciousness has always been second nature for us. From very early on, food waste was never an option, fast fashion became a thing of the past, and to upcycle was satisfying and creative. Poor waste management contributes to climate change issues beyond weather patterns, ecosystems, the air and the sea; it’s also deeply intertwined with global patterns of inequality, meaning millions of poor people face greater challenges, like food and water security, livelihood security, migration and more.
Our view is that waste is a resource, often available to be used again or upcycled into something useful. We make pudding companies waste product useful, by combining their sustainable glass pots with our sustainable bamboo lids. We hope our customers will use the lids to store leftovers, instead of throwing them away – and distribute bulk snacks into the pots, instead of wasting material via single-use snacks.
We strive to be as green as possible, which is why our freight is always by ship.”

Two London hotels have been nominated for a European sustainability award thanks to their green credentials.
Stow-Away Waterloo and Strand Palace Hotel have been nominated for the European tourism sustainability award “GrINN Awards 2022” -organised by Quartz Inn Hotels- for their outstanding green policies and care for the environment.
Stow-Away, a unique sustainable building
Located very close to Waterloo station, this eco-aparthotel has a unique building created with 26 re-purposed shipping containers with a roof fitted with solar panels which transfer any excess electricity not used in the building back into the national grid.
The air conditioning and hydro units recycle and recirculate energy between the heating and hot water systems, and by doing so create real energy efficiency and reduce any unnecessary waste.
Stow-Away’s design focuses on space-efficient models that deliver improved ergonomics in a stylish and eco-friendly way.

Other sustainable practices put in place on the property are the following: rooms are lined with eco friendly timber cladding, all waste from the hotel and the on-site restaurant is recycled, all lighting is low energy and LED, recycling bins are placed in all the rooms to make it easier for guests to separate their waste and all single-use plastics have been removed.
Strand Palace Hotel, a multi-million pound sustainable refurbishment
Strand Palace is a 785 rooms hotel just minutes from Covent Garden. A recent refurbishment completed in May 2020 was the perfect opportunity for the hotel to choose more sustainable furniture and appliances.

The new carpets throughout the hotel contain over 84,500 recycled plastic bottles, preventing them from going to landfill. In addition, all rooms now have shower cubicles rather than bath tubs (with the exception of the accessible rooms) and LED lighting.
GrINN Awards 2022
According to Ignacio Merino, Quartz Inn Hotels’ Managing Director:
“The main objective of the awards is to promote good sustainable practices in the hospitality sector and to increase general awareness of the impact of hospitality and tourism activities on the environment”
Hotels and tourism leaders from 23 European countries have been nominated and the finalists will be announced in the coming weeks after the jury deliberation. The winners from each of the 50 categories will be chosen among all finalists after a public voting process.
