Water in a Box was launched in 2014 when one of the founders was inspired to make a change after coming face to face with the sheer amount of plastic being dumped into our oceans.
Its mission is simple; to repackage spring water into something that is better for the environment, better for our health and accessible to everyone.

Is the environmental cost of coffee really that bad?
Over the past one hundred years coffee has become a staple of life[1]. Now, it is the second biggest export within developing countries (after oil). And for many, it is hard to begin a day without one. In fact, the global yearly intake of coffee is 400 billion cups – a number which is expected to triple by 2050. Thanks to big brands and suppliers, Costa Coffee and Starbucks and Nescafe, this increasing need is met. And yet – is there an impact of this consumption? How does this affect the environment and producers?
There is an environmental impact of consumerism. The very act of buying coffee has an environmental footprint, with packaging and dairy milk all adding to the total carbon footprint we each emit. There is no doubt in the need for sustainable coffee production, with studies showing that an environmentally friendly coffee has a carbon footprint 77% lower than a regular cup of coffee[2]. And not only that, it is also shown that more environmentally friendly coffee is hugely better for the developing countries that produce it.
One major example of this eco-friendly production is the emergence of Voluntary Environmental Certifications (VECs). It is the VECs’ job to ensure not only the economic performance of manufacturers (creating profits and higher incomes for people in developing countries) but also the environmental sustainability[3]. Think of it as an alternative to FairTrade production. In manufacturing countries such as Costa Rica, VECs have improved the environment by eliminating agrochemicals, increasing biodiversity and decreasing carbon emissions. This has been incredibly successful, to the point of reaching carbon neutrality[4].
Then there is the concern of sustainable production being unattractive to the regular coffee buyer, in a term reflected through the “attitude-behaviour gap”[5], meaning people would rather spend less money on less eco-friendly coffees.
However this trend of ignoring sustainability is on the way out[6]. It is beginning to be seen that coffee lovers within the EU and USA are willing to pay for environmentally sustainable coffee. And as well as this, major brands are now responding to the demand for sustainable production – with Starbucks announcing an impressive 99% ethically sourced production.
The role of major brands themselves are incredibly important, as the more big brands embrace sustainability, the more people are willing to buy into it. There is no doubt that this “green trend” will come into the mainstream.
So what to do? Well, non-dairy coffee that is made sustainably is the best for the environment. These are, in particular, coffees that are bought from a shop, or online. Coffee brands to keep an eye out for are ones with Rainforest Alliance Certifications or Fair Trade Certifications. And as of 2022, there is already a huge decrease in the environmental impact of coffee, a trend which is only promising to increase.

The air we breathe is often taken for granted and it’s no secret that the rising air pollution rates are taking a toll on our environment, and subsequently our health.
But which towns and cities are the worst (and best) for breathing clean air?
The American Lung Association State of the Air 2021 report found that despite nationwide efforts in controlling air pollution, more than 40% of Americans – over 135 million people – are still living in areas with unhealthy particulate pollution and ozone levels.

Wellbeing benefits of biophilic design make strong case for its use in rental homes
Spring sunshine brings Canada Gardens into full bloom
Quintain Living – the award-winning management company overseeing the rental of more than 3,250 apartments in Wembley Park – is showcasing the benefits of living in harmony with nature in the midst of an urban landscape. Its Canada Gardens homes bring biophilic design, which evokes a deeper connection with nature by blending our homes with the natural world, into the centre of this vibrant London neighbourhood.
“Biophilic design incorporates a love of nature into our homes, emphasising a connection with the natural world. This has a whole host of benefits, from enhanced air quality to stress reduction, mental restoration, and a positive mood. As part of our long-term commitment to our residents’ wellbeing, we are proud to deliver these benefits as a fundamental part of life at Canada Gardens.”
Designed around an urban country concept, Canada Gardens brings nature indoors at every turn – whether that be in the lobby, on the rooftop or within the acre of podium gardens. According to Canada Gardens’ interior design team at Fossey Arora, the development is all about relaxation and connection with nature.
“There’s a really positive energy in creating a home packed with greenery and natural materials. Bringing nature indoors introduces a sense of harmony and peace in a space that is hard to rival with man-made materials. All of the 743 apartments and the extensive amenities have been designed with this concept at their core.” – Fossey Arora
This connection with nature spans across the senses. Stepping into the super-lobby, the scent of orange, bergamot and lavender welcomes you, delivering the promise of warmer days as we head into spring. Large Ficus Nitida trees and Monstera in black fiberstone planters from Oasis Plants dot the vast space and there’s a verdant hanging garden gradually emerging from the library balcony above. Over the years this will grow into a trailing curtain of greenery that reaches all the way to the floor.
“Canada Gardens offers a new kind of city living and has been created for those who want to enjoy urban life at a different pace. With all the facilities and social spaces available – it’s cosy, welcoming and makes you feel at home from the moment you move in.”
Ketsia Bond, Associate Designer, Oasis Plants
Natural materials abound throughout Canada Gardens. This is particularly apparent in the clubhouse, where more than 40 hanging baskets with trailing plants adorn the beams, in addition to a variety of floor-standing and table top potted displays. The gently diffusing scent of fig trees floats through the sun-filled space, which serves as a community hub for residents looking to rest, relax and enjoy the views to the gardens beyond.
Wandering through the acre of gardens, residents can enjoy beds of flowers, bushes and trees, grassed areas dotted with outdoor kitchens and BBQs to enjoy with friends or family. Those looking for a deeper connection with the food on their plate can hire allotment beds and make use of the potting shed, with its growing timetable, advice from Wembley Park’s resident landscaper and other green-fingered resources.
“Even those who work remotely benefit from Canada Gardens’ biophilic design. We’ve dotted beautiful wooden, work-from-home sheds within the lush, green gardens, putting workers at the centre of a natural environment that delivers a boost to both mood and productivity.” – Fossey Arora
Within the apartments themselves, natural, tactile materials abound. Wooden bedframes, side tables, coffee tables, chairs and more are paired beautifully with a palette of soft greens and greys inspired directly by the natural world. Touches of darker blue add warmth (imagine a dusky spring sky as evening deepens), while timber panelling ensures nature flows through into the bathroom.
“Canada Gardens aren’t just homes that look good – they’re homes that feel good as well. Biophilic design plays a big part in that. Living in London’s most exciting new neighbourhood doesn’t have to mean disconnecting from nature, it can mean quite the opposite. So few homes in the capital have their own green space. Canada Gardens turns that on its head.”

TWO VOICES TO SHOUT LOUDER …
THE PEOPLE’S PANTRY is a mobile refill shop and delivery service, operating from a gorgeously restored electric milk float with a wide range of pantry, eco cleaner and bathroom refill essentials – all from independents, mainly organic, all vetted for their sustainability and ethical credentials. “We have long admired Crop Drop’s mission to change our food system; and their community and sustainability focused values closely mirror our own,” said The People’s Pantry co-founder, Lisa Jones (pictured right with husband Stephen Thomas). “Joining forces with them means that we can now offer our customers a wider choice and a convenient route to making a difference. But also amplifies our joint messages to grow awareness of food transparency, waste reduction and the small changes in our consumer behaviour that all add up. We hope that it will both encourage more people to be part of the change and take a few car journeys off the road.”
CROP DROP is a social enterprise, sourcing fresh, organic fruit and veg from urban growers and London local farms, with the focus on reducing food miles, promoting nature and soil-friendly small-scale farming without bee-harming pesticides. The result is a choice of seasonal produce bags that are delivered to thirteen drop points across Haringey for weekly or fortnightly collection, reducing food waste at the source by ordering only what is needed and donating any surplus to good causes. Bags range from £6 for a small fruit bag to £18.50 for a large veg bag without potatoes.
“As a Haringey based scheme we’re excited to be teaming up with another small, local biz to make it easier for local people to make sustainable food choices,” says Rachel Dring, founder of Crop Drop (pictured right). “The People’s Pantry champions many of the values that are close to our heart, from their transparent and ethical sourcing policy to their commitment to ridding our homes of pointless packaging. We hope the partnership will make it easier for Crop Droppers to stock up on all their packaging-free pantry essentials alongside their weekly bag of organic veggies.”

Lidl has announced the trial of the UK’s first supermarket ‘smart’ laundry detergent refill station, in partnership with Chilean sustainability start-up Algramo. Launching in Kingswinford, West Midlands, the six month pilot could save 2,970 single-use plastic containers from one store alone.
Shoppers at the Kingswinford store are able to purchase a dedicated, 100 per cent recyclable refill bottle filled with a choice of four Lidl own brand laundry detergents for the same price as a standard single-use bottle. After the refill bottle is purchased, any refills then come with a 20p saving – reducing customer spend as well as plastic, meaning customers will never pay more for a more sustainable choice.
The refill bottles have been specially designed with a UK-first smart chip, which allows the machine to register and recognise the bottle. Once the refill process is complete, shoppers can collect the ticket printed with the chosen product’s barcode and pay at the till with the weekly shop.
The innovative refill machines are fully automated – making the process simple and fast, also helping to avoid any awkward spills created by manual refill machines.
The refill machine will support four laundry detergents from Lidl’s Formil range:
· Formil Super Concentrated Bio, £1.69 (£1.49 for every refill)
· Formil Super Concentrated Non-Bio, £1.69 (£1.49 for every refill)
· Formil Super Concentrated Tropical Lily, £1.89 (£1.69 for every refill)
· Formil Super Concentrated Honey Petals, £1.89 (£1.69 for every refill)
The trial builds on Lidl’s commitment to combatting plastic waste, which has already seen the removal of 1 billion pieces of plastic from stores, as well as the commitment to reduce its use of plastic packaging by 40 per cent by 2025.
Mark Newbold, CSR Manager at Lidl GB said: “At Lidl, we believe you shouldn’t have to pay more for doing the right thing. It’s why we’re especially proud to be trialling this pioneering refill technology that not only helps customers reduce their plastic usage, but also their weekly shopping bill.”
Since 2013, Algramo has been dedicated to helping Chilean families buy life’s essentials in reusable packaging and is now an international benchmark for circular economy. With this partnership, Lidl becomes the first retailer to pilot Algramo’s circular platform in Europe, while also allowing its customers to pay, on average, 10 per cent less for the products.
This trial is just the first step of this partnership, with plans later in the year to trial alternative innovative designs to bring further improved customer experience and potential savings.
Chris Baker, Country Manager at Algramo UK said: “We are very happy to help Lidl customers make simple everyday actions more sustainable. During 2021, just in Chile, we managed to reuse more than 250,000 plastic bottles, that are still being used by consumers, keeping more than 30 tons of plastic in the economy and out of the environment.”

Used Kitchen Exchange (UKE) has today been awarded the prestigious Queen’s Awards For Enterprise in recognition of its outstanding achievements for ‘Sustainable Development’ within the kitchen industry, one of only 225 organisations nationally to be recognised in this award category since its inception in 1993.
Founded in 2015, Cheshire based UKE has become a disruptor in the kitchen industry, forging ongoing partnerships with manufacturers and retailers alike to establish a robust, verifiable trade-in model for pre-owned and ex display kitchens, extending product lifespan through circular thinking. To date, bringing these kitchens to market for ethically driven and cost conscious buyers has saved over 12 million kgs of carbon. With 40% of carbon emissions coming from UK households, UKE are playing a vital role in supporting the UK’s Net Zero target by ensuring resources are recirculated and emissions minimised.
The Sustainable Development Award is given to commercially successful products, services and management that benefit the environment, society and the economy. The 2022 Judging Panel commended UKE stating; “UKE has been awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development because they demonstrate sustainable thinking throughout the whole product process and delivery, including influencing the wider kitchen supply industry.”
Upon receiving the accolade Helen Lord, UKE’s founder commented; “We are exceptionally proud and humbled to receive this prestigious award. UKE has proven that with passion and disruptive thinking, smaller businesses can think big when it comes to sustainability. From what began as a kitchen table business, we have embedded sustainable thinking into the kitchen, bedroom and bathroom industry to give homeowners an ethical and affordable solution when renovating their home. Our success has been a direct result of the commitment and passion of a small by mighty team and we genuinely couldn’t be any prouder than we are today.”
Now in their 56th year, the Queen’s Awards for Enterprise are the most prestigious business awards in the UK with winning businesses able to use the esteemed Queen’s Awards Emblem for the next five years.

But will this trend suit both people and the environment?
“Fast fashion”, the designer of cheap, mass-produced clothes, has rapidly expanded in the past few decades. And there is no doubt that this has seen its benefits. For example, allowing for lower income families to afford clothing[1], and giving everyone an opportunity to wear trendy clothes (known as the democratisation of clothing). It is well known now about the rampant overconsumption that has begun to grip the western world – as fashion becomes increasingly cheaper and new trends come in increasingly faster. But what are the costs of this? Can the environment survive it?
SHIEN is one of the main culprits for fast-fashion, with it creating 315,000 styles this year alone[2]. An ecommerce website that advertises itself as a B2C (business-to-consumer) – its obsession over new trends has allowed its revenue to grow from $2 billion in 2018 to £15.7 billion in 2021. But another thing allowing this growth to take place is the inhumane conditions it creates for factory workers.
Recently, a Public Eye investigation into the 17 factories supplying SHIEN found that workers within the global south were being overworked and exploited[3]. It was reported that workers work 75 hour weeks – violating labour laws within not only China, but every country where SHIEN sources clothing. And as well as this, jobs are in a permanent state of insecurity due to workers being paid per item that they produce. This goes against the strict laws laid out within SHIEN’s own labour contracts[4], which state that they “comply with fair labour guidelines”.
And what about the environmental costs of fast fashion? Fast-fashion is not simply the fast paced manufacturing of clothes, but also the rapid disposal as well. This has drastic knock-on effects on the environment, as currently fashion is the second largest polluter. The US exporting 500,000 tonnes of clothes – and the majority of it ending up in landfills (as of 2020 only 1% of clothes were recycled)[5].
And the production method can also be problematic – as 90% of clothing is made with cotton or polyester. Polyester is a famous synthetic, made up from oil, and cotton requires enormous amounts of water and pesticides to grow.[6] In fact, every person’s clothing consumption within the EU emits 270kg of carbon yearly. And by 2050 the fashion industry may use a quarter of the world’s carbon budget.
However there is improvement taking place, and it is an improvement that can be easy to contribute to. Clothing is produced as a response to consumer needs, meaning individuals can change over manufacturing occurring if they decrease in consumption. Alternative fashion choices, such as shopping second hand or trading clothes, can decrease the demand for new clothes to be manufactured.
As well as this, governmental policies are beginning to take place – as seen within the new EU laws created last month[7]. With pledges to push sustainability, creating long-lasting products, and decreasing the amount of greenwashing, there is a promising future for the decline of fast fashion – and also for the environment.
Whilst these policies are not being pushed within UK legislation (government rejecting 2019 environmental audit committee’s recommendations) there can be ways to push the movement towards sustainability. Writing to MPs, or signing petitions, can force the government to face the mounting environmental damages occurring.

The past few weeks we have been experiencing the wonderful “Tool Kits for Eco Heroes” I love to get crafty and do activities which help support saving our planet.
“Stand up for what you believe in!”
Make a Megaphone.
We made a wonderful Megaphone to shout and share to our farm friends that our voices need to be heard!
We begun by collecting pens and paper from our local neighbours and friends, to reuse and recycle materials we already have. I was donated this green paper by a friend and the pens were given to me from previous birthdays! We outlined our megaphone on the green paper and cut out the shape adding our own design inside. Once you have finished designing the paper and cut it out, prepare to glue it into the megaphone shape!I decorated my megaphone sharing who we are! The Eco News! We are always wanting to shout and scream about eco friendly businesses and how you can live sustainably.
After a few chocolate eggs this bank holiday I decided to make some Banana Bread ready for a healthier week, we never let our bananas go to waste, these only got brought yesterday but if we use some now we won’t have any left over by the end of the week.
The Tool Kit box contains this great home baking recipe for you to make your own bread! DO not let your bananas go to waste! 1.4 million bananas go in the bin everyday!
We have loved our sample box of the Tool Kit for Eco Heroes! Packed full of great activities and fun to help your children look after our planet this Earth Day 🌎⭐️
