A wide range of strong, sustainable and biodegradable bamboo golf tees!

Leading the field in promoting sustainability on the golf course, innovative golf brand Green Swing possess a genuine passion to invoke change and positively impact the industry with its extensive range of bamboo golf tees.

As golfers and explorers at heart, Green Swing offer an impressive alternative to plastic and is actively encouraging consumers to make the switch, eventually eliminating the need for plastic tees. By looking to the future of golf, Green Swing’s purpose promotes a more inclusive, diverse sport, recognising that change is required, and the game is evolving.

Based in the UK, Green Swing is a startup born from a change in focus for its founder, entrepreneur Tim McManus, after experiencing redundancy in 2020. He launched the company soon after and sold the first box in August of that year.

Tim McManus, founder says: “We are committed to making a change, for the better. Green Swing is built on the principles of offering products that serve a true purpose. We also recognise that everyone plays the game differently so we have gone to great lengths to bring an extensive range to the game – for golfers it can be a lucky or trusted tee to hit that cracking drive. We hope Green Swing will now fill that space as we make no compromise on quality while being focused on sustainability.”

Green Swing have invested heavily in customised designs, and unique styling to bring a collection of forward-thinking bamboo golf tees to the game, that are instantly recognisable, making the change from plastic easier than ever. From Classic to Castle, 25mm through to 83mm, its design caters for every golfer and every game. From keen to fair-weather golfers, from experienced to brand new players taking their first trip around the course: everyone is considered.

The environmental consequences of our addiction to plastic are massive. The production and distribution of plastic have a huge carbon footprint, which is exacerbated because so many plastic products are designed to be disposable, and are destined for the landfill after just one use. A 2015 study estimated that 90% of the world’s seabirds and 25% of fish contain plastic in their stomachs. By 2050 we expect to see more plastic in our oceans than fish. The more people that wake up to the issues of plastic pollution, the greater the impact of positive action.*

Bamboo grows at an accelerated rate, taking only a few months to reach maturity. It absorbs higher levels of CO2, which in turn gives a greater purpose to grow and cultivate it. Bamboo is tougher than wood counterparts – this makes it well suited to becoming a golf tee, great at holding the ball and each tee should last longer. It is biodegradable, which means it is able to be broken down over time and avoid becoming pollution.

n addition to this, Green Swing products are packaged in an unbleached kraft box which is 100% recyclable, fits neatly in the bag and also makes for sustainable gifting.

“Green Swing is focused on the future of golf, and we have a genuine ambition to disrupt the current status quo. With continued investment, our range is now available across Europe and in the USA with developments well underway for additional products to cover the wider game.” – Tim McManus

Did you know “one out of every three mouthfuls of our food depends on pollinators”? World Wildlife Fund. We are so reliant upon these insects yet our methods of food production and urban spread means they are dying at an alarming rate. For many years now environmental groups have been pushing for the ban of toxic pesticides and the increase in wildflower habitats. Up till now they have been largely ignored. Hopefully it is not too late to reverse the damage done and to restore the pollinator population back to what it needs to be. There have been some good decisions recently such as many UK councils reducing the cutting of grass to allow wildflowers to populate roadside verges. Insects have always had their own imaginative network to help them navigate from flower to flower, but as the landscape has changed significantly over the last 70 years with urban development, modern farming methods and ever increasing transport links, what was once open countryside with wildflower-rich habitat, these natural insect ‘paths’ have now been drastically reduced. The more pressure we put on our councils to allow public open areas with grass to grow wildflowers, the more chance it will give insects to rebuild their invisible network.

Imagine Britain had no rail or road network and you had to map out your journey using memorable places, buildings and landmarks. Think how strenuous and confusing that would be and how often you might get it wrong. To help the general public and councils alike recreate this vital network for insects, the environmental organisation BugLife has developed an innovative solution called B-Lines, that you can be part of.

B-Lines are “a series of ‘insect pathways’ running through our countryside and towns. They link existing wildlife areas together, creating a network, like a railway, that will weave across the British landscape” (BugLife) which will give our pollinators the road map they so desperately need to survive.

B-Lines won the prestigious European Landowners Association’s Bee Award in 2016, in recognition that it is successfully encouraging farmers and land owners to reconsider their land management strategies and to include appropriate wildflower and traditional cottage garden flower areas for pollinators. But there is still a lot to be done and we can all contribute. If you have a garden, balcony or even just a window ledge, you can grow pollinator friendly flowers and then submit your pollinator project to the B-Line network map. It is a great time to start as March to October is when bees need you most. Try primrose, buddleia and marigolds.

The next step is for local councils to start cutting out pesticide use in public spaces as sadly toxic weedkillers are still being used and are having a huge detrimental effect on the wildlife and ecosytem. For further reading on this please do visit Pesticide_Free_Essex ‘s Facebook page or your local action group.

But what about the agricultural land in the UK? Did you know that only 2.8% of the total farmed area on agricultural holdings in the United Kingdom is organically farmed!? (UK Gov Dept of Environment, Food & Rural Affairs). More recently in the UK, we find ourselves with a Government willing to approve emergency use of thiamethoxam (a devastatingly toxic neonicotinoid insecticide) in order to save the British sugar industry. UK sugar beet crops have been suffering from abnormal levels of aphids due to the mild winter. These aphids carry the Virus Yellows disease and the crops are under severe threat. The successful application was made by British Sugar (the sole British producer of sugar from sugar beet), who promises “limited and controlled emergency use” on their website. The chemical has been authorised in the UK from March this year because sugar beet is a non-flowering crop.

The EU banned this substance in 2013, along with three other toxic neonicotinoid insecticides (imidacloprid, clothianidin and thiacloprid) as they recognised the high risk to bees and other pollinators. This ban is on flowering crops but the EU have also recognised these toxic substances have a detrimental effect to the entire ecosystem whether the crop is flowering or not. The emergency-approved insecticide is to be added as a coating to the seeds before they are planted rather than sprayed directly onto the crop, however, there is no guarantee the chemical will not leach into the soil and surrounding waterways.

As British Sugar buys up all the British produced sugar crop (which coincidentally is predominantly grown in the East of England), it has considerable influence on how it is grown and is therefore able to lobby the Government. There are around 10,000 livelihoods and other businesses tied up within the UK sugar industry that need protection, so facing crop devastation is obviously a very serious issue but as we have learnt the decline of the health of the environment and wildlife needs to be a far greater cause for concern. Although the sugar beet crop won’t flower, the weeds within it will, so it has also been agreed that industry-wide herbicides can be used to control the weed growth. So it seems they are adding yet another toxic layer to what is already a rather toxic problem. Sandra Bell, pesticides campaigner for Friends of the Earth said: “This should not be allowed. The government and industry must redouble their efforts to find alternative and effective pest and disease control for farmers – focusing on agroecological methods that work with nature, not against it. This must be central to the new National Action Plan on pesticides that the government is now drawing up.”

Intense public pressure on the Government to develop another strategy that involves non-toxic land management and crop growing is the only way to reverse this emergency approval. Links to sign the petition below. If we do not stop it we will soon find land that is un-farmable and no insects left to pollinate it.

British Sugar do seem to be making a move to develop alternative options instead of relying on neonicotinoids in the future as per their statement on their website: “Across the homegrown sugar industry, we continue to progress our plans to tackle Virus Yellows without the need for neonicotinoids in future years, such as through grower practices and seed breeding programmes”. However that doesn’t affect the immediate issue they face now. By pushing for this emergency approval, it appears they are protecting their own interests first and foremost with very short term thinking. And the authorisation of such chemicals seems to be shrouded in secrecy as Friends of the Earth states on its website that it has had to repeatedly resort to Freedom of Information legislation for documents that should be open to public scrutiny. Along with reduced use of pesticides, there needs to be a serious improvement in the transparency in decision making.

I for one, am deeply saddened about this news as we have reached a critical point in the survival of bees. So what can we do? If you are as worried about this as me, then you can:

Together we can ensure we all have a beautiful, healthy planet.

  • New toilet and kitchen rolls are made from 100% recycled and responsibly sourced paper
  • Packs of paper-wrapped kitchen rolls will cost just £3 and toilet roll just £3.50

Morrisons is launching paper-wrapped toilet and kitchen rolls to limit plastic waste and increase the use of recyclable packaging in customers’ homes.

Toilet and kitchen rolls are two of the most commonly bought household products in the UK, with 98% and 82% of customers respectively, putting them in their baskets every week. The plastic film used to wrap these products has historically been difficult to recycle.

The paper packaging, which is responsibly sourced and FSC certified, is 100% recyclable to make it easy for customers to put it into their kerbside collections. The toilet paper and kitchen sheets themselves are also made using 100% recycled paper.

Customers can save money whilst making eco-friendly choices – as Morrisons jumbo kitchen rolls cost just £3 (for a two pack[1]) and the toilet rolls just £3.50 (for a nine pack[2]). In comparison, high street prices for some alternative eco paper-wrapped products can be as high as £2.80 for a single kitchen roll and £9 for a nine toilet rolls.

Morrisons is also making the production process of these products more sustainable. The new rolls and packaging are being produced using 100% renewable energy at local sites in the UK to lower their carbon footprint.

Leanne Jarrett, Household Buyer at Morrisons, said: “Millions of toilet paper and kitchen rolls are bought every day in the UK. So if we can remove plastic entirely from these products – and if all customers bought these alternatives – we could save nine tonnes of plastic from being used a year. We’ve priced our new eco products at only a fraction more than our standard ones, so that customers can affordably make the switch.”

Paper wrapping on toilet and kitchen roll is the latest expansion in Morrisons sales of plastic free products. It follows a commitment to remove all plastic ‘bags for life’ from every store nationwide; offering over 75 lines of loose fruit and vegetables; and encouraging customers to bring their own containers to Morrisons Butchers, Seafood and Deli counters.

Morrisons jumbo Eco Kitchen Towels (two pack) and Eco Toilet Rolls (nine pack) can be purchased now in store and from Morrisons.com.

United Kingdom, January 24, 2022: Davpack, a leading corrugated cardboard box and packaging supplier within the UK, along with the other companies belonging to the TAKKT AG Group has recently announced that they have hit a huge milestone for a tree donation. The collaborative efforts of all the businesses have helped reach an outstanding 500,000 trees to be given to The Eden Reforestation Project (ERP). The customers of Davpack and TAKKT AG have helped contribute to over 719 million trees being produced, planted, and protected alongside 10,990 employees becoming empowered with fair wages throughout 8 countries.

The Eden Reforestation Project was created in 2005, it is currently assisting with reforesting and supporting a range of countries such as Madagascar, Mozambique and Haiti. They also have new plans to share their services with Ethiopia and the Philippines. ERP work in some of the world’s most remote and politically unstable places and overcome countless challenges to fulfil their mission of planting trees and saving lives. The Eden Reforestation Project introduced their ‘Employ A Plant’ methodology where they introduce simple planting techniques to support local communities in not just restoring the environment, but also their economy. ERP states that their “success and the communities’ success are inextricably entwined”. The partnership between Davpack and the Eden Reforestation Project has allowed individuals to afford shelter, education, food, clothing, and medicine. That is why Davpack and the TAKKT AG Group as a whole are determined to continue to provide ERP with trees to ensure that these daily necessities keep falling into the hands of those who need it most.

Davpack also believes it is important to note that it is not only the company’s efforts that have helped achieve the half a million milestone. Their customers investing in Davpack’s corrugated cardboard boxes and other forms of packaging deserve to be commended as well. Barney Byfield – the Managing Director of the company – states: “We are delighted to have enabled the planting of half a million trees thanks to the support from our customers. For every order, a tree is planted. Davpack is working hard to remain at the forefront of eco-packaging with a clear commitment to sustainability. By supporting the planting of trees and other social projects, we are contributing positively to the planet in ways beyond the products we supply. There is much more for us all to do together, and we remain very committed to a broad eco programme.”

The Global Carbon Project (GCP) projected that fossil emissions in 2021 would reach 36.4 billion tonnes of CO2 (measured in Gigatonnes of Carbon Dioxide – GtCO2), only 0.8% below the pre-pandemic high of 36.7 GtCO2 in 2019. Davpack and the Eden Reforestation Project’s partnership is vital to making a difference to the current stagnant pattern of carbon emissions. The replanting of trees will help absorb CO2 and other greenhouse gasses from the atmosphere and recreate ecosystems that wildlife can form habitats in. Alongside this, Davpack has significantly improved its eco-packaging range to increase the companies sustainability, lowering its carbon emissions and energy usage.

Among other key insights:

– Each tree planted by Davpack comes at no extra cost, the eco-friendly products range from home or office supplies and food containers to popular e-commerce packaging options.

‘Together we pledge our commitment to sustainability and work in collaboration to give back to our environment.’ – Davpack All tree planting is done in a sustainable manner – no logging areas are planted; forest wardens are hired, and local residents are supplied with alternative fuels.

Love is in the air: Human-powered vending machine dispenses carbon-neutral champagne to celebrate the environmental benefits of switching to TalkTalk’s Future Fibre broadband from existing copper-based services.

  • TalkTalk gave away carbon-neutral champagne just in time for Valentine’s Day, to celebrate benefits of switching from standard broadband to full fibre which can reduce lifetime carbon emissions by up to 565Kg – or the equivalent to sending 4,036 Valentine’s Day cards.
  • TalkTalk teams up with Manchester United and England Footballer Katie Zelem to give away a year’s supply of carbon neutral champagne. TalkTalk’s network will be up to 80% more energy efficient following the switch from existing copper-based services to full fibre. In celebration of the environmental benefits, TalkTalk is giving away a year’s supply of carbon neutral champagne.

Researchers from TalkTalk surveyed 1,500 modern Brits and revealed the true signs of a potential suitor, with almost a third (31 percent) saying caring for the planet was a major turn-on. While a staggering 70 percent of those polled admitted they’d be put off dating someone who didn’t try to protect the environment.

Will Ennett, Head of Sustainability at TalkTalk, which conducted the research said: “Our research shows that when it comes to finding ‘the one’, caring about the planet is increasingly important to modern Brits. Ahead of Valentine’s Day, we’re encouraging people to think about eco-friendly switches they can make to help show the planet some love.

Our research shows that by switching to Future Fibre from standard broadband, TalkTalk customers can reduce their lifetime carbon emissions by up to 565Kg* – to put this into context, around 26 adult trees are needed to absorb that amount of CO2***.”

While 59 percent would love to receive environmentally friendly gifts, like digital valentine’s day cards or carbon neutral champagne, from their partner.

When it comes to relationship red flags, 28 percent said that dropping litter was a total no no, 34 percent couldn’t be with someone who didn’t care for animals, 15 percent wouldn’t stand for a partner who left the tap running while they brushed their teeth, and more than one in twenty (6 percent) would be put off if someone couldn’t keep their house plants alive.

Switching from standard broadband to full fibre, allows TalkTalk customers to reduce their lifetime carbon footprint by up to 565Kg*. That’s equivalent to sending a mammoth 4,036** Valentine’s Day cards – enough cards to fill the length of 6 football pitches and almost double the height of the Eiffel Tower!

All you have to do to be in with a chance to win is like Katie Zelem’s Instagram post (Katie Zelem (@katiezelem) • Instagram photos and videos) and tag the person you would share the champagne with. @TalkTalk will reveal the lucky winner on the Instagram post this Valentine’s Day – so don’t forget to follow them too.

In a brand-new partnership, Buddy & Lola and Bromley Council have come together, bringing awareness, and supporting responsible dog ownership by helping owners clean up after their pets in the local community.

With the installation of ‘41’ new bin stations across the London borough of Bromley, taking their total to 66, this exciting partnership will provide FREE compostable, biodegradable waste bags to dog walkers.

The aim of the project is to reduce dog fouling in ‘hot-spots’ and popular dog walking areas, whilst taking the pressure from the council- putting ownership of waste back to the individual. The environmental stations allow for those moments where owners may have forgotten or simply run out of bags.

The stations are sponsored by local and national businesses, with popular dog supplement company Buddy & Lola being the latest sponsor. Buddy & Lola are a well-established online brand who have helped over 100,000 dogs live healthier and happier lives with their unique and highly effective, all-natural supplements and online advice.

Steve Bolton CEO of Buddy & Lola says: “Initially we understood the importance of this issue, which is best tackled from two angles. Firstly, to remind the small minority of dog owners who are not vigilant in clearing away their dog’s mess and keep their green spaces clean for everyone to enjoy.

And secondly, to provide an environmentally conscious solution, to ensure dog waste is disposed of in a sustainable and planet-friendly manner. By supplying FREE, 100% compostable waste bags to dog owners, we also hope it will show that responsible businesses can work with local people to protect, enhance, and enjoy our beautiful green and open spaces. Any opportunity to reduce production of fossil fuel plastic, however small, should be encouraged.

The aim is to inspire dog owners to pick up after their pets and use the bags provided. With the two organisations working together with this environmental initiative, trees are also being planted to help reduce our carbon footprint for years to come.”

Buddy & Lola are positively impacting the planet whilst getting exclusive outdoor advertising and boosting CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) with the help of stations supplier Eco Green Communities.

Bromley Council have been in a successful partnership with Eco Green Communities since 2017- after the implementation of 25 environmental stations to help tackle the problem of dog fouling. This increased to 40 stations in November 2020, reaching an impressive 66 by October 2021.

The use of compostable bags has a huge positive environmental impact and Bromley Council residents have used 580,000 of the bags so far. The bags would normally have been plastic taking hundreds of years to degrade- only 6 months for the compostable bag.

Just 1 kilo of this plastic would create 6 kilos of carbon, ultimately entering the earth’s atmosphere. This means that so far Eco Green Communities with Bromley Council have saved the planet 9.74 tonnes of carbon.

Martyn Bradley, Operations Director of Idverde said “In 2016 we ran a pilot with the Eco Green Communities to provide environmental stations that dispensed certified compostable dog waste bags, we started with 10 stations. The positive impact that the project has brought to the area has been significant.

With the involvement of Buddy and Lola as a sponsor for this project, it ensures that this is not only a zero cost to the council budget, but significantly impacts the community and the local environment positively by reducing litter, dog fouling, reducing single use plastic bags.

Green spaces have never been more important, and we are keen to continue supporting people to make the right choice. The borough now operates 66 stations, meaning even more of Bromley’s green spaces are covered.”

We have recently seen the launch of Pack A Range, a new business striving to create a marketplace of sustainable plastic free toys and crafts all with the ethos build, play, learn!

The company behind the idea, Mauveworx, was one of the UK’s largest manufacturers of PPE Face shields for the NHS during the Covid crisis, all produced from their factory in Ferndown.

Their Managing Director, James Martin, was to all too aware that the necessity to protect the nation quickly, and in large numbers, was resulting in an unfortunate rapid rise in single use plastic waste around the world. The saving of lives at this time became a priority, sadly to the detriment of the planet. This wasn’t sitting easy, and the father of 5 who, also frustrated with the amount of plastic toys building up around his home, decided to take matters into his own hand and create a solution to the problem.

Amazing idea for your Eco Kids

Says James, “after observing our own consumption of plastic through toys I did a bit of research to understand the issue better. The toy market is $20bn a year industry, of which 90% contains plastic. Unlike single use plastics, such as drink bottles, the toy market is not geared towards recycling with most ending up in oceans or landfill. Also, a recent study of 2000 parents found that 25% admitted to throwing away plastic toys that were in perfect working order. These alarming figures compelled me to take urgent action, which would enable a way for playtime to not only be fun, but also eco-friendly”.

So the Mauveworx Products division started a journey to create Pack A Range, toys to build, play and learn from, all striving to be plastic free. Not only have they designed products in-house such as Pack A Den, Pack A Desk, Colour-In Castle and Cardboard Castle, they have also built upon their collection of products from like-minded brands who share the same sustainable ethos. Catching the attention news outlets such as the BBC, Pack A Range are becoming the destination for sustainable and ethical toys.

“We were keen to provide a range of different products to appeal to different ages (3 to teens) and different budgets (£5.00 – £50.00), to allow plenty of choice. Whether you’d like a T Rex Mask, a DIY Wooden Model Musical Box, a den to play and colour in, or an educational 3D map of the universe, we offer a very diverse range of toys to suit many tastes”.

After seeing great success, Pack A Range has now extended to The Toy Tribe where they aim to create a community of gather like-minded, eco individuals to join us in making a difference, to help save our planet and animals! One change at a time. Those who sign-up (for free) will get exclusive access to fun and educational tips, recommendations of eco activities, invites to family-friendly events that help the wider community and more!
